TAPING
THERAPY
Taping is a treatment modality used to
1. Support
and guide muscles (substitute and assist)
2. Stabilize ligaments and noncontractile tissues
3. Promote biomechanically efficient movement
4. Provides intimate splint
There are 2 types of taping material:
1. The rigid tape is mainly used for stability, movement restriction
and alignment while the kinesio tape is used to assist/guide/support
the
muscles and therefore facilitating/promoting biomechanically efficient
movement with minimum discomfort.
2. Kinesio Taping is
a modality treatment based on the body’s own natural healing
process. The Kinesio Taping method exhibits its efficacy through the
activation of the neurological
and circulatory systems. This method basically stems from the science
of Kinesiology, recognizing the importance of body and muscle movement
in rehabilitation and everyday life.
They are 4 major functions of Kinesio
Taping:
1. Support muscle
Improve muscle contraction in weakened muscle
Reduces muscle fatigue and cramping
Increase ROM
Relieves pain
2. Removes flow
congestion of body fluids
Improves blood and lymphatic circulation
Reduces inflammation
3. Activates body analgesic
systems
4. Correct joints
problems
Adjust misalignment caused by spasm and
shortened muscle
Normalize muscle tone and fascia in joints
Improves ROM
Relieves pain
Reduce joint subluxation
These Taping techniques have
been refined into a useful and effective method for treating clients
who
have movement control problems due to cerebral palsy, head injury,
stroke, Erb’s Palsy and other neurologic and orthopedic diagnoses.
